FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major insurance companies and are also an authorized Community Care provider for the VA! Just give us a call so we can run your insurance and let you know what it covers.

  • What chiropractic techniques do you use?

Dr. Colten uses a variety of techniques depending on the patient’s needs. His preferred technique is called “diversified” or manual adjusting. But he was also trained in Activator, Thompson (drop table), and several soft tissue techniques to help loosen the muscles before the adjustment.

  • How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic works by restoring your body’s ability to heal itself. When working correctly your nervous system, cells, tissues, and organs are designed to resist disease and bad health. With chiropractic we evaluate for and remove any interference to your nervous system. By adding motion into a stuck segment this improves spinal function, movement, and nervous system function. This in turn allows the body to heal itself and return to normal health. A healthy spine and healthy lifestyle are key to optimal health.

  • What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is the art of using a low-amplitude, high-velocity force in a specific direction applied to a joint that is “subluxated”, or not moving and functioning correctly. This can be done using the hands, or an instrument. The purpose is not only to get the joint moving, but also to affect the nervous system by removing interference.

  • Is chiropractic safe?

Yes! Chiropractic has proven itself to be very safe. This is a result of being conservative and taking a natural approach to health, that tries to avoid invasive procedures and drugs. As proof that chiropractic is safer than other healthcare professions, just look at the malpractice premiums. Chiropractic is a fraction of the cost compared to medical doctors. As for the rumor about strokes, research shows that one in 2 million treatments could cause a stroke… But when you compare that to over the counter medications, it is estimated NSAIDS and aspirin kill 40,000 people in the USA every year.

  • Do I have to keep coming back? How often?

You don’t HAVE to, but you should WANT to. Our first goal is to get you out of pain, but it SHOULD NOT end there. If that is all we do, then most likely the cause of your pain is not taken care of, even though the pain is gone. If we stop here it is most likely your pain will come back eventually, because we never fixed the issue. EVERYONE has multiple areas of dysfunction in their body, even if it does not hurt. If these are not taken care of the stresses of life will eventually, cause it to get worse, cause another injury, or interrupt nerve function to other parts of the body. So even after you are out of pain, we would like to see you to minimize dysfunction and PREVENT FUTURE health issues. Optimally after the initial “pain care” we suggest everyone be seen at least once to twice a month. You do maintenance to your car, you need to take care of yourself. You can replace a car, but you only have one body. Regular exercise and proper nutrition are also a huge part to optimal health.

  • Can I adjust myself?

Chiropractors are trained to adjust a specific location, with a specific force, and a specific direction. It is impossible even for them to adjust themselves correctly and accurately. If you are adjusting yourself most likely you are moving the joints that already move well, not the surrounding joints that are not moving correctly. Eventually this could lead to hypermobility, and degeneration at that segment.

  • Do children need chiropractic care?

Babies undergo significant spinal trauma during birth. Many parents have their newborns evaluated soon after birth for this reason. The adjusting technique is adapted to the age of the child and is very safe. There are many childhood health complaints that can be traced back to the spine. Often there are health issues that show up in adulthood that could have been prevented or decreased by seeing a chiropractor early. Here just a few conditions that chiropractors have been known to help in kids: colic, sleeping difficulty, delayed milestones, ear infections, bed wetting, and scoliosis.

  • Is it ok to be adjusted while pregnant?

It is not just “ok”, it is encouraged! Many pregnant mothers have found relief through chiropractic for discomforts, like sciatica, low back pain, and making the delivery easier for her and the baby. Adjusting is always adapted to the patient’s condition.

  • What kind of education did you have?

Chiropractors (DCs) are well educated. The education to become a chiropractor is very similar to the education of a medical doctor in most respects, but with a different philosophy. Obviously chiropractors are not trained in surgery or drugs, but are trained heavily in spinal, joint, and nerve dysfunction. Chiropractors and medical doctors spend about the same amount of time in class. Before a DC can apply to the state for a professional license, each applicant must take and pass four parts of the National Board Exam. Even after school postgraduate education is required for license renewal.
